The Donna Fargo Exhibit located at The Robert Smith House is quite impressive and features her albums, her Blue Mountain greeting card line, Fan Club memorabilia, and numerous pictures spanning her music career. A spectacular red sequined stage outfit (designed by Bill Belew) with matching boots and hat worn by Donna are displayed in the exhibit. Most of the memorabilia included in the exhibit came from Donna's own personal collection.
Donna (a.k.a.Yvonne Vaughn) graduated from Mount Airy High School and High Point College where she received a bachelor's degree in English. After college she followed her brother Gayle to California where she taught English in high school for several years. It was there that she met and married Stan Silver, a record producer and he encouraged her to write and learn the guitar. The rest is history as they say. In 1972, she had her first hit, "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA", a song she had written herself.
Her career encompasses several decades with awards from other countries including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. Here in her own country, she was awarded Billboard Magazine's "Best New Female Artist" in 1972 and 1973 and "Best Single Artist" in 1974 and 1978. In 1972, she was awarded 4 Grammys by the Academy of Country Music winning "Top Female Vocalist" plus "Album of the Year", "Single of the Year", and "Song of the Year" for "Happiest Girl in the Whole USA".
In 1978 Marie and Donnie Osmond took an interest in Donna and produced The Donna Fargo Show for television that ran through 1979. At present she lives in Nashville and in addition to her musical talents, she spends time writing poetry and greeting cards. She has her own line of greeting cards called "The Donna Fargo Collection" distributed by Blue Mountain Arts. She has also written two poetry books entitled "Trust in Yourself" and "To the Love of My Life". Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting exhibit.
