Mount Airy Fiddlers Convention and Free Workshops and Jams

It’s time for the Mount Airy Fiddlers Convention! Don’t miss the free workshops, demonstrations, and jams on Friday! See below for the full schedule!

The Mount Airy TDA & Veterans Memorial Park Inc. is providing FREE SHUTTLE SERVICE June 1st-4th from Veterans Park to Downtown Mount AiryWednesday 12-5 ~ Thursday 9-8 ~ Friday 9-6 ~ Saturday 9-6
The shuttle service will run continuously and will leave Veterans Park just inside the Main Gate with stops at the Visitors Center on Main Street and the Andy Griffith Museum. Enjoy Local Restaurants, Shopping, Visitors Center, Fiddle & Banjo Crawl, Museum of Regional History, Andy Griffith Museum, Old-Time Music Heritage Hall at the Historic Earle Theatre, Movies (Monday and Wednesday 7 pm 336-786-2222), a free jam session at 7 on Thursday at the Earle & much moreore. www.visitmayberry.com

 

FREE WORKSHOPS, DEMONSTRATIONS, JAMS on FRIDAY JUNE 3, 2016 at the Indoor Grandstand at Veterans Memorial Park on W. Lebanon Street in Mount Airy

FRIDAY 11:00 AM – BANJO WORKSHOP – ANDY EDMONDS

 FRIDAY 12:00 NOON – SURRY COUNTY OLD-TIME MUSIC DEMONSTRATION

Jim “Vip” Vipperman will facilitate a demonstration featuring NC Folk Heritage Award Winner Verlen Clifton with Wes Clifton, Andy Edmonds, Chester McMillian, Jacob Bowen, Richard Bowman, Barbara Bowman, Marsha Todd, Frank Bode and others.

FRIDAY 1:00 PM – FLAT FOOTIN’/TRADITIONAL DANCE WORKSHOP – AARON RATCLIFFE

Aaron Ratcliffe, award winning dancer, will lead the workshop. Richard and Barbara Bowman and others will accompany.

 FRIDAY 2:00 PM – SURRY COUNTY OLD-TIME FIDDLE WORKSHOP – RICHARD BOWMAN

FRIDAY 3:00 PM – SURRY COUNTY OLD-TIME FROLIC – ANDY EDMONDS

Jam, dance and enjoy old-time music. Come prepared to play and dance. Andy Edmonds will lead the Surry County good times. All musicians welcome!

On-site camping is available – arrive early for the best spots!

Admission is $10 per person for the competition/performances on Friday and Saturday. Children ages 6 and under are free.

2:00 p.m. –  5:00 p.m.   –  Guitar, Mandolin, Dobro, Bass Fiddle, Dulcimer, Autoharp

5:45 p.m.  –  Youth Dance and Awards
6:00 p.m.  –  All bands perform
Adult dance after the completion of the band competition

We are so excited about Surry Arts Council’s Blue Ridge and Beyond Music Series in Mount Airy, NC!

Jan. 3 – Breaking Up Christmas, old-time dance and concert, featuring The Slate Mountain Ranblers & The Buckstankle Boys, free

Feb. 26 – David Holt – Mentors and Friends: A photography and music presentation, free! Followed by a jam, so bring your instruments!
Feb. 27 – Tommy Jarrell Birthday Celebration, featuring Back-Step, The Buckstankle Boys, and The Slate Mountain Ramblers – $10, general admission – a full day of music with free youth competition at 5:30 prior to the concert and earlier in the day 9:30 workshops + 11 a.m. Merry-Go-Round live radio & jam session for $6
Feb. 28 – Pokey LaFarge – reserved $30; balcony gen. adm. $20
March 14 – Rhonda Vincent & the Rage – reserved $45; balcony gen. admission $35
March 25 – Elliot Engel presents “The Mystery of Robert E. Lee” at Trio Restaurant – dinner, followed by presentation $60 per person, limited to 60 people

EVERY WEEK THROUGHOUT THE YEAR – Thursday night free jam sessions at 7 p.m. & every Saturday at 11:30 a.m. WPAQ’s live radio show – Merry-go-Round, the second longest live radio broadcast in the nation! This is followed by a jam session!
