Yadkin Valley Winter Wine Passport Program Adds Breweries

SURRY COUNTY, N.C. – For the eighth straight winter, wine passports allow folks to sample their way through the Yadkin Valley at Surry County wineries. And for the first time, local craft breweries are included in the mix.

The newly renamed Winter Wine and Beer Passport is on sale now. It provides tastings at eight wineries and two craft breweries between Nov. 24, 2017, and March 18, 2018.

“There are so many couples where one drinks wine but the other drinks beer, so it’s nice to have something they can enjoy as a couple,” says organizer Pat Colwell of Carolina Heritage Vineyards in Elkin.

In addition to wine and beer tastings, passport holders receive a keepsake cork magnet at each location featuring the logo of that particular winery or brewery. The tastings also come with complimentary food pairings on three designated Saturdays – Jan. 6, Feb. 3 and March 3.

Another perk of the passport is special discounts at local merchants, restaurants and hotels.
“People love the passport. Many come back year after year, and they give it as a gift to family and friends,” Colwell says. “It’s really just the idea of having something fun that people can do at their leisure for one weekend in winter or spread it across several winter weekends.”

This year’s participating wineries are: Adagio Vineyards, Carolina Heritage, Elkin Creek, Grassy Creek, Roaring River, Round Peak, Slightly Askew and Stony Knoll. The breweries are Angry Troll and Skull Camp.

“The fun part is we have such a diverse set of wineries in Surry County,” Colwell says. “People ask about our signature offering, and I say our signature offering is our variety, not just one type of wine. You name it, and we probably have it here.”

People should consider buying passports early for two reasons. Early bird pricing makes the good deal even better, and all passports sold out last year and will likely do so again.

Through Nov. 23, individual passports are $54, while couples’ passports are $89. Starting Nov. 24, those prices increase to $64 and $99. Estimated value of each passport is $225.

Budbreak Wine and Craft Beer Festival

The 2016 Budbreak Wine and Craft Beer Festival will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. in beautiful Downtown Mount Airy, NC. The festival features top North Carolina wineries and craft beer producers, wonderful food, and great music.

Time Sawyer

Time Sawyer is interested in “real people and real songs” and that’s just what the listener finds in their music – a sense of realness. Time Sawyer blends a grassroots feel with heart-felt lyrics to put on a high-energy, entertaining show.

The folk rock band’s name reflects the pull between the past and the future. The character Tom Sawyer evokes the rural background and love of home that the four band members, who all hail from the rolling foothills of Elkin, North Carolina, share. Time is a muse for songwriting; it’s the thread that runs through life, bringing new experiences, giving us a sense of urgency, while still connecting us with our past.

The memorable lyrics and strong melodies result in songs that will stay in your head long after the music stops. Time Sawyer continues to develop a loyal and growing fan base. Whether they’re playing in an intimate coffee shop or a large outdoor festival, their goal is to forge a face-to-face connection with the audience so that they become friends who happen to be fans.

Phatt City

3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Phatt City is the name of a band originally founded in 1972, by a group of regional band directors. The name came from a saying that describes a big, “fat” sound. The spelling was a play on words that was common in that era. Phatt City’s original influences came from groups like Chicago and Earth, Wind, & Fire. In addition to Rhythm and Blues, Phatt City has an extensive beach music catalog. The band consists of 10 members, including a full horn section of Trumpet, Tenor Sax, Trombone, and Bari-Sax. Along with a rhythm section, there are four lead singers in the group, with one being female. Phatt City is probably best know as having a great rapport withit’s audiences. Having fun is contagious, and we love to spread it around!

Vine and Dine Gala brings Wine, Dinner & Dancing to Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The third annual Vine & Dine Gala, hosted by the Surry Wineries, takes place this Saturday at BB&T Ballpark in downtown

The event will be held indoors at the ballpark’s club level, providing an elegant, climate-controlled space. Admission includes dinner, tastings from 11 Yadkin Valley wineries, and dancing to live music provided by Karon Click & The Hot Licks.

Participating wineries are: Adagio, Brushy Mountain, Carolina Heritage, Elkin Creek, Grassy Creek, Herrera, Olde Mill, Round Peak, Skull Camp, Slightly Askew and Stony Knoll.

“A special thing about the Yadkin Valley is its variety of wines,” says event organizer Louis Jeroslow, winemaker at Elkin Creek Vineyard. “I think people will really enjoy the evening and be pleasantly surprised with the wines they discover.”

Legends Hospitality at BB&T Ballpark will provide the small-plate menu, while Karon Click & The Hot Licks will perform an eclectic lineup of jump swing, upbeat blues and cool jazz. Dancing is encouraged.

The event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and four raffles will take place hourly. The first three prizes are passports for complimentary tastings at all participating wineries. The final prize is an “instant Yadkin Valley wine cellar,” a selection of wines from the 11 vineyards at the gala.

Herrera Vineyards Opens in the Heart of the Yadkin Valley

DOBSON, N.C. – The Yadkin Valley’s newest winery is also one of its nicest.
Herrera Vineyards opened May 28 amidst rolling hills just a mile outside the town of Dobson. The Herrera family went to great lengths to ensure the winery would be a destination worthy of its location in the heart of the Yadkin Valley wine region.
Sisters Monica Herrera-Rangel and Carolina Herrera-Ochoa purchased the 54-acre former Black Wolf Vineyards in 2010. A year later, Herrera Vineyards began selling wines from grapes grown at family-owned vineyards in southern Surry County.
Even though Herrera’s wines came to market in 2011, the plan all along was to take time to properly renovate and upgrade the Black Wolf facilities. A lot of effort also went into the vineyards and landscaping, including a waterfall and two 75-foot wide terraces.
The result is a striking tasting room/restaurant with a Southwestern villa exterior and a warm, inviting interior combining rich wood textures with hand-made iron fixtures and accents.
“We were a little nervous at opening because when you work on something for four years, you’ve got to impress,” said assistant manager Manny Perez. “However, it has been very well received. It’s such a beautiful setting. As soon as you drive up, you get the feeling of being transported someplace very nice.”
The main building houses a tasting room in one wing, a gift shop and overflow tasting room in the other wing, and a 22-seat restaurant in between. Additional dining for up to 24 is available on the main terrace.
The tasting room and restaurant overlook the vineyards, with a winery and guest cabin located on a lower portion of the property.
Herrera Vineyards offers a dozen wines crafted by winemaker Kevin Childers, a graduate of the enology and viticulture program at Surry Community College. Of the wines, eight are red and four are white. According to Perez, five are dry wines, five are semi-sweet and two are sweet.
Three of the most popular wines are the Dry Riesling, Solera and Tannat.
“Our grape varietals are different from what consumers are used to. We have Malbec and Tannat, which are red varietals often found in South America,” Perez says. “We don’t have some of the traditional wines people are familiar with, which I think is a good thing. It allows us to
offer something unique. It’s a draw.”
Herrera’s Dry Riesling was named the best overall white wine at the 2014 North Carolina State Fair Wine Competition, while the Rosé and sweeter Riesling earned silver medals in their categories.
Operating hours for visitors are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday hours are noon to 5 p.m. Lunch is available Tuesday to Sunday and dinner is available Friday and Saturday nights. The winery is closed Mondays.
“From where we are located, you can hit 20-25 different wineries in about a half-hour drive,” says Perez. “We couldn’t ask for a much better position. Being so central to the whole Yadkin Valley is a big plus.”

Surry Community College to host Southeastern United Grape & Wine Symposium, Nov. 5-6

Dobson, NC – Internationally renowned experts in Viticulture and Enology will be featured during the Third Annual Southeastern United Grape and Wine Symposium to be held Nov. 5-6 at the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture & Enology on the campus of Surry Community College.

“This event will be a wonderful educational opportunity consisting of lectures and workshops to help winemakers and grape growers increase their knowledge base,” said David Bower, SCC Enology Instructor. “Our symposium, educational program and our partnership with VESTA (Viticulture and Enology Science and Technology Alliance) focuses its efforts on a technical education and training experience for those interested in the fields of Viticulture and Enology. Our symposium specifically targets the entire Southeastern United States with hopes of bringing regionally specific technical topics to light for those in our area. This year we have included a new marketing track in our program that will focus on direct-to-consumer concepts, wine business, and brand building in the Southeast.”

The symposium is being coordinated by SCC and sponsored by VESTA along with media partner, Wines & Vines magazine, the North American wine industry’s oldest and largest publication and industry directory, which merged with Practical Winery Vineyard, the publisher of technical journals. VESTA is a partnership of 17 colleges and universities nationwide that deliver groundbreaking distance educational opportunities for the grape and wine industry. Also, Dr. Andrew Reynolds, professor of viticulture, Brock University; Dr. Sara E. The event will include a Tour of North Carolina Wines Lunch on Wednesday, Nov. 5, featuring wines of North Carolina’s Yadkin Valley along with a Lunch and Learn about food and wine pairing on Thursday, Nov. 6.

The Grand Wine Tasting on Wednesday night (Nov.5) at 5:30 will highlight wines of the Southeast complemented by heavy hors d’oeuvres and is open to the public for a non-conference rate of $25. The registration cost is $100 until Oct. 18 and $125 after the early bird deadline. The registration deadline is Oct. 26. Participants can choose to register for the entire conference, which includes all meals and the Grand Wine Tasting. Tickets to Lunch and Learn or the Grand Wine Tasting may be purchased separately.

Three workshops are being held at Surry Community College in conjunction with the symposium. VESTA Instructor Barry Gump is teaching a Wine Analysis Workshop on Nov. 3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. along with an Introductory Brewing Workshop, Nov. 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This brewing workshop will cover the science and history of brewing, and participants will complete an extract-based beer and a mini-mash. The Wine Analysis Workshop is $150, and Introductory Brewing is $100.

VESTA Instructor Melba Allen is leading a Wine Sensory Analysis Workshop on Nov. 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This workshop will benefit winemakers, cellar workers, winery staff, and wine enthusiasts who seek a deeper understanding of sensory evaluation topics and their impact on a winery’s success. In addition, workshop attendees will be guided through sensory test methods to access perceived differences and preferences in wine. A certificate will be awarded from VESTA after the completion of this workshop. The workshop cost is $150.

Surry Cellars is the label for wine produced at Surry Community College through its viticulture and enology program, and part of the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture and Enology. Wines produced by Surry Cellars have won local, regional and national awards. Elkin Creek Vineyard

Established in 2001, Elkin Creek Vineyard bottled their first vintage in the fall of 2005. The winery overlooks Elkin Creek and the century-old Elkin Creek Mill. The vineyards are comprised of six lush acres of Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier.
Enjoy a delightful meal—prepared in a hand-built, wood-burning brick oven—at The Kitchen at Elkin Creek.  The Kitchen is also open for special events, such as weddings, receptions, private parties, etc.
Every Sunday from 11 to 5, enjoy made-to-order pizzas from the wood-fire brick oven. Reservations are strongly encouraged. They also bake homemade artisan sour dough bread, which is available Thursday-Sunday in the tasting room along with light fare such as an antipasto plate of select meats and cheeses, local fresh jams, and local farmstead cheese.

Elkin Creek Vineyard also offers creek-side cabins for overnight rentals. The cabins have a full kitchen, queen-sized bed, stone fireplace, soaking tub, sleeper sofa, porch swings, and more.
